From the contemporary angst of Ghost Images (1979), Minot now turns to a neat blend of allegory and Biblical revisionism. Ham, Noah’s third and youngest son, is the narrator and there are elements, he wants us to know, that the Official Version of the story has left out. The scorn, for instance, with which Noah’s idea for the ark was met from within the family.

This is a rather strange book I ran across in a used book store. It tells the "true" story of the Great Flood of Bibical times. It is actually quite irreverent but absolutely hilarious. I doubt if any of our fundamentalist friends of the Jerry Falwell ilk would find this work even the slightest bit amusing, but not being of that particular tribe, I did. Mr. Minot is a good story teller, and blend part bible, part history and part human nature into an unlikely tale, but a tale full of ironic humor. Recommend this one for a fun read but certainly do not recommend it be taken seriously.Product details

Surviving the Flood A Novel edition by Stephen Minot Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
I read this 20 years ago and found it hilarious. Reading it again it's new and still refreshing. The previous reviewer called it strange, but after Jesus Christ Superstar and Godspell 35 years ago it seems like more of the same, but more detailed and more human. It doesn't feel irreverent, and I'm fairly devout, but I suppose it depends on how rigid you feel you have to be. It's just another angle on the story, and it doesn't threaten any belief system. Like TV, movies and music you are free to close the book and turn it off. Chill out, it's just a funny story.
